One Small Step That Lasts
I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating: I get excited about growth. I want to go all in. I make plans, get organized, take on way too much — and it’s all over before it even started.
You can’t go from 0 to 100 overnight. Hashem gave us an entire lifetime to grow into the people we’re meant to become.
Think about it: when a baby is born, its fists are clenched tight — taking, receiving, needing everything. As the child grows, they begin to share, then give, then build a family, and slowly they learn to live more with open hands.
When a person leaves this world, if they’ve done it right, their hands are wide open — no longer taking, only giving.
It takes a lifetime to go from a closed fist to an open hand. Hashem doesn’t expect us to turn 180 degrees overnight. He created us to take baby steps if we want real change to last. As Chazal say: tafasta meruba lo tafasta, tafasta me’uta tafasta — if you grab too much, you’ll end up with nothing, but if you take hold of something small, you can truly hold onto it.
That’s the heart of Elul. We look honestly at where we’ve grown and where we need to grow. And then — to make change real — we need something tangible, one small step forward.
